Vehicle Registration

You have two options for new registrations. You may purchase a temporary license plate and a Wisconsin license plate will be mailed to you within 90 days, or you may purchase a Wisconsin hard plate, which you will receive immediately from the Port Washington Police Department.

Temporary License Plates
Temporary license plates are available for purchase at the Port Washington Police Department, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., or at any of the locations listed here. If you choose to obtain your temporary license plates at the Port Washington Police Department, you will need to bring along the following items:

You will then be issued a temporary license plate which is valid for 90 days. You should receive your permanent license plates from the State of Wisconsin during this time.


Hard License Plates - Auto and Truck only
Hard license plates are available for purchase at the Port Washington Police Department, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., or at any of the locations listed here. If you choose to obtain your hard license plates at the Port Washington Police Department, you will need to bring along the following items:

  • Your driver's license.


  • Vehicle title with both the buyer and seller's signatures.


  • Any lien release paperwork, if applicable.


  • Cash, check or money order, made payable to the "Port Washington Police Department".

There will be a $19.50 service charge in addition to any other fees.

License Plate Renewals
Several options are available for renewing your license plates:

  • You may renew your vehicle registration by mail at the address shown on your renewal notice.


  • You may renew your vehicle registration by calling 1-800-236-7368.


  • You may renew your vehicle registration on-line at on-line renewal.


  • You may renew your vehicle registration at the Port Washington Police Department, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., or at any of the locations listed here. If you choose to renew your registration at the Port Washington Police Department, the cost is $10.00 in addition to the renewal fee and any late fees that may apply. Fees must be paid by cash or with a check or money order, payable to the "Port Washington Police Department".

If your vehicle is up for emissions testing, you will not be able to register it at the Port Washington Police Department and will need to take it to the Emissions Testing Station, located at 7240 Sycamore Dr., Cedarburg. After you have passed emissions, you may then renew your registration at the testing station.

If your vehicle registration is suspended due to any unpaid parking tickets in the state of Wisconsin, you will not be able to renew your registration. Parking tickets must first be paid for at the police department(s) that issued the parking tickets.

Replacement Titles
Replacement titles can be purchased at the Port Washington Police Department. There is an additional charge of $19.50 for this service. You will receive your replacement title from the Department of Motor Vehicles in 5-7 business days.
