Applicants for the position of Police Officer should carefully note the following selection process, which has been devised to insure that all applicants are provided a fair and equitable opportunity to compete for a position with the Port Washington Police Department. To be considered for a Police Officer position, it is necessary that an applicant successfully pass each step of the selection process, administered in the following order:

Written Exam: Those applicants whose application forms are accepted will be invited to participate in a written exam and will be notified of the testing location, date, time, etc.
Written Examination:A passing score of 70% is required in all sections of the test to continue in the selection process.
Oral Interview: Applicants will participate in an Oral Interview Test before a panel. The Oral Interview will consist of predetermined questions that elicit information about the candidate's honesty, integrity, desire to serve the community, pragmatic view of policing, inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively both with the community and peers, and willingness to accept responsibility.
Assessment Center: Selected applicants will participate in an assessment center.
Oral Interview - Police and Fire Commission: Selected applicants will participate in an Oral Interview with the Police and Fire Commission. The Oral Interview will consist of predetermined questions that elicit information about the candidate's honesty, integrity, desire to serve the community, pragmatic view of policing, inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively both with the community and peers, and willingness to accept responsibility.
Final Ranking: The results of the oral and written examinations and assessment center will be used to establish the rank order of the eligibility list.
Background Investigations: The Chief of Police will select candidates from the eligibility list and cause personal background investigations to be completed. Background investigations are done to confirm the accuracy of the information provided by the police applicant and to gain additional knowledge necessary to evaluate the applicant.
Conditional Offer of Employment: If a selected candidate has an acceptable background, he or she will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment.
Psychological Examination: If the Conditional Offer of Employment is accepted, the candidate will be scheduled for an examination with a psychologist. If the results of the psychological exam are acceptable, the candidate will be scheduled for a medical exam.
Medical Examination: The candidate will be scheduled for a medical examination that will focus on the candidate's ability to meet job requirements over an extended period.
Probationary Period: The Police and Fire Commission considers the probationary period to be an extension of the selection process. Every person hired will serve a one year probationary period. A candidate may be released from employment by the Chief of Police at any time during the probationary period.
