Vehicle Registration

Vehicle registrations for auto, trucks up to 8,000 lbs. gross weight, and motorcycles can be processed at the Port Washington Police Department or at any of the locations listed here: https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/vehicles/title-plates/walkin.aspx#o. Please call ahead for dates and times that our clerical office is open.

Hard License Plates

To obtain registration plates you will need:

  • The vehicle title.
  • Your driver's license.

You will receive your hard plate and a temporary registration. The DMV will mail you the permanent registration and title. Moped registration plates stay with the moped when it is sold.

License Plate Renewals

Several options are available for renewing your license plates:

  • You may renew your vehicle registration at the PWPD during office hours (again call ahead to make sure we will be open when you plan to come in).
  • You may renew your vehicle registration by mail at the address shown on your renewal notice.
  • You may renew your registration by calling 1-800-236-7368.
  • You may renew your vehicle registration online at https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/online-srvcs/title-vehicle/emvpublicdefault.aspx.

If your vehicle is due for emissions testing, you will not be able to register it at the PWPD. Emission testing locations can be found here: http://www.wisconsinvip.org/WivipPublic/Pages/TestFacilities.aspx

After you have passed emissions, you may then renew your registration at the testing location.

If your vehicle registration is suspended due to any unpaid parking tickets in the state of Wisconsin, you will not be able to renew your registration. Parking tickets must first be paid for at the police department(s) that issued the parking tickets and the suspension must be cleared through DMV.

Temporary License Plates

Effective December 1, 2019, temporary plates are no longer available from the Port Washington Police Department. You can visit the DMV’s website for information. https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/vehicles/title-plates/nolaf.aspx
